JH Child Protection Training Raises Awareness of Trafficking of Children in the UK

Increased figures of trafficking of children in the UK are difficult to monitor and unless a person has a trained eye to identify a potential child that is being trafficked the cruel activities will always continue. Child Protection Training have put together important steps to identify and action trafficking of children and will include the information in its ‘Trafficking of Children’ training sessions; available to all private and public sectors such as Care Homes and Social Care Staff.

JH Child Protection Training is rolling out a number of training courses in Liverpool, London and Birmingham relating to Trafficking of Children and is focusing towards Child Care Staff, GP’s and all sectors who support and/or deal with Children.

So what is Child Trafficking?

Trafficking of children is a very modern day version of slavery and crosses many borders, boundaries and continents. In its simplest form it can be defined as ‘the recruitment, transfer or harbouring of a child for the purpose of exploitation’.

Child trafficking has been internationally accepted as a human rights violation and it is only through public actions and research (normally via Child Charities) that the topic has been given global awareness to such a high degree.

While recent research has yielded information on the nature of child trafficking, little is known about its magnitude.

Difficulties in identifying victims?

A Child smuggled into the UK will certainly be here under duress and will be threatened or will have been given a false illusion of a promise of a new life. It is very difficult to identify a trafficked child as they are more often hidden and unfortunately the true figure of trafficked children is masked by this factor.

Children may not see themselves as victims or may not be willing to disclose information due to possible reprisals from their traffickers. It would have been instilled into them of negative perceptions of the authorities and a fear factor that suits the captors. While recent research has yielded information on the nature of child trafficking, little is known about its magnitude. The Council of Europe report has found that some children trafficked into the UK are going missing from local authority care. It also indicates that an increasing number of children are brought into the UK for the purpose of sexual exploitation forced labour.

It calls for better trained supervisors or foster staff caring for them.

Awareness of Child trafficking

The aim of the training courses is to improve awareness of the cruel trade and to deliver an understanding to professional bodies such as Social Workers, Youth Workers and GP’s.
